Transparent Room: The Distant Now That Cannot Be Grasped

Hiroko Hasegawa / Jiaming Wang

Exhibition Period: 2.17 (Sat) - 3.3 (Sun)
Opening Party: 2.23 (Fri) 18:00 - 20:00

To stop, one must touch
Life swept away by life
Colors find meaning in a closed room
Seeing the contours of a floating room

Hasegawa, who majored in textiles during his student days and expressed himself with fabric materials, uses the points of departure found in everyday encounters as a basis to depict a world unraveled from his own interests through painting. Hasegawa's perspective of wanting to "gaze at the nonchalant aspects of the world" carefully captures a moment in our lives that seems to be swept away by the diverse waves we live in. The everyday landscapes woven through the eyes of the artist can be said to be guided vaguely onto the screen after a valuable process.

Focusing on the theme of rooms, influenced by Rothko, Jiaming is bringing a sensory interpretation onto the canvas and exploring non-existent or ambiguous elements in the paintings. As if searching for the unclear connections among people in contemporary society, the colors and forms appearing on the screen with ambiguous measures sometimes evoke melancholy or complex emotions. Depicted as motifs are the faces, expressions, bodies, and attitudes of people hidden in everyday scenery. While using the language of painting eloquently, the artwork describes the abstract activities of people.

Please take this opportunity to explore the worlds of these two artists through their paintings.
