MJK Gallery is pleased to present the second solo exhibition by Canchen Li.

In this exhibition, Li deepens his ongoing inquiry into the boundaries between vision and matter, image and structure, presenting a practical development of his original theory of “ruinality.” Rather than focusing on physical ruins themselves, Li's interest lies in the overlapping images and imaginative expansions that emerge from them — perceptual structures unique to our present era, in which time, space, and meaning often find themselves suspended.

The term “ruinality,” as used here, does not refer simply to decayed remains of the past. Instead, it points to a contemporary experiential framework where images, structures, and memories slip out of sync, meanings are intentionally withheld, and futures seem already lost. Such ruinality manifests in spaces where functions have collapsed yet structures remain, where meanings are bleached out but the system persists, where time appears halted and what might have been is already gone.

The works on view resist any definitive notion of "completion" or "viewership." Instead, they invite the audience into an experience of unfinished time, suspended meaning, and fragmented space. Through these conditions, new image-experiences are generated—those that are neither fixed in memory nor fully projected into the future.

Li’s practice investigates the ruptures in perception, time, space, and meaning in the contemporary world. What emerges are visual conditions in which function has been stripped away, structure remains, and meaning drifts—offering a critical reflection on institutional systems and how we see.
As Li himself describes, “I do not use the brush; the world itself becomes the brush.”
We invite you to engage with this new chapter in his evolving exploration.
