Panta Rhei - Memory, Recognition, and the Changing Sensescape

Shinomiya Suzuka × Xu Zichun

Artists: Shinomiya Suzuka × Xu Zichun
Exhibition Dates: April 26, 2024 (Friday) to May 12, 2024 (Sunday)

In ancient Greece, the philosopher Heraclitus famously declared "Panta Rhei," meaning "all things flow." The development of philosophy in ancient Greece is widely viewed as a bold quest for knowledge, evolving from natural philosophy to a focus on the human interior and culminating in concrete discussions about "recognition."

This exhibition introduces two artists who, from different approaches, embody a pictorial longing for material, offering a perspective on the world through their paintings. Through their works, they present a process of diving deep into oneself from the world's existence, aiming to grasp the present through the constant interplay of "seeing and knowing the world," while avoiding a mere focus on the issues presented on the canvas. The creation of a "horizon" or the production process on the canvas serves as a practice to tether flowing memories, information, and consciousness within the changing daily landscape.

Shinomiya discusses her creative process: "My drawings and salt works start from the idea that the world's reality is 'flowing.'" She defines the world's structure and philosophical aspects of things on the canvas, illustrating the constant interchange between subject and object. "Flow" reminds us of Orientalist values, while simultaneously evoking Greek philosophical discussions that order arises from the constant change of the world's state. The lyrical impressions on the canvas invite us to see how Shinomiya herself views the world.

Jo, on the other hand, who asserts that "matter does not completely vanish from the universe but continues to exist in another form," is a promising painter from Yunnan Province, China. Influenced by the environment of this mountainous inland region, his "Natural" series, which includes a "horizon" in almost every painting, reflects the artist's memories and his process of capturing the infinite nature. The exhibition also features his "Nirvana Song Series," based on memories that generate pleasure and depression in human life, exposing the accumulation of experiences lurking in consciousness.

As paintings that showcase latent consciousness, don't miss this opportunity to view the current positions of these promising artists.
